Canadian Buffalo Berry is a native deciduous shrub found throughout North America.
This hardy, medium-sized shrub will tolerate poor soil conditions and produces attractive, edible - though very bitter - red fruit.
Interest in this plant as a health food has spiked recently due to the saponins found in the berries, which some claim reduce cholesterol. The British Columbian First Nations also traditionally used it to make "Indian Ice Cream", a whipped berry dessert.
