Pembina Plum vs Chui Lum Tao (CLT) Peach

Pembina Plum is one of the best-tasting plums that can be planted on the prairies. It is semi-freestone with orange flesh that is soft, juicy, and sweet which contrasts with the thick, sour, dark red skin. The plums can grow up to 5 cm in diameter and are well-suited for fresh eating, baking, and preserves.

They typically ripen in mid to late August and should be picked as soon as they are ripe. If left too long, the fruit will fall off the tree.

Pembina Plum is a hybrid between Canada Plum and Japanese Plum. For fruit production, it needs to be planted with another variety for cross-pollination. Canada Plum and American Plum are considered universal pollinizers.

Chui Lum Tao Peach (CLT) is a very cold hardy peach cultivar. The taste and form of these peaches is reported to be similar to the other cold hardy peach varieties. The root system on this variety is known to be more vigorous than most peaches.

This variety is resistant to powdery mildew, but has a shorter window to accept successful budding and chipping. Because it is relatively uniform in height and stem diameter when young, it is easy to work with in orchard production.

This is a favourite choice for those in the BC interior and in Southern Ontario. Many find this rootstock to be both hardy and higher yielding than others. The Chui Lum Tao Peach is considered to be true to seed.
