Crimson Passion Cherry vs Chui Lum Tao (CLT) Peach

Crimson Passion Cherry is a cold-hardy dwarf sour cherry. It produces deep, dark burgundy fruit that are larger and sweeter than other varieties, with a texture that is similar to sweet cherries. They are one of the top varieties for fresh eating but are also well-suited to baking and preserves. In the spring, beautiful white flowers cover the branches, adding ornamental value.

Crimson Passion Cherry was developed at the University of Saskatchewan. It is recommended to grow dwarf sour cherries as a shrub rather than a small tree. The shrub form tends to bear fruit earlier and is less susceptible to winterkill.

Sour cherries are self-fertile; however, planting with additional varieties for cross-pollination can increase yields.

Chui Lum Tao Peach (CLT) is a very cold hardy peach cultivar. The taste and form of these peaches is reported to be similar to the other cold hardy peach varieties. The root system on this variety is known to be more vigorous than most peaches.

This variety is resistant to powdery mildew, but has a shorter window to accept successful budding and chipping. Because it is relatively uniform in height and stem diameter when young, it is easy to work with in orchard production.

This is a favourite choice for those in the BC interior and in Southern Ontario. Many find this rootstock to be both hardy and higher yielding than others. The Chui Lum Tao Peach is considered to be true to seed.
