Thiessen Saskatoon (Serviceberry)
Ranch Elderberry

Thiessen Saskatoon is a deciduous shrub that produces delicious edible fruit. It is one of the most productive saskatoon varieties. Its fruit is great in pies, preserves or eating fresh.

Thiessen Saskatoon is popular with U-Picks and home owners because of its taller tree-like shape and larger berries. But it is not the best choice for berry orchards as it is too tall for most mechanical harvesting equipment.

Ranch Elderberry is a vigorous and high yielding Black Elderberry cultivar. It ripens earlier than other varieties, and is smaller and more compact making berry harvest easier. The berries are well suited for baked goods, jams, jellies, and syrups. They are high in vitamin C and reported to be beneficial for the immune system. Planting them near other varieties for cross pollination and in full sun will result in higher yields.

Warning: the seeds, stems, leaves, roots, and uncooked berries of the Ranch Elderberry are toxic to humans when eaten in quantity. You should cook the berries to make them safe for human consumption.
