Berry Blue Honeyberry is a hardy deciduous shrub. Its fruit is deliciously tart and perfect for fresh eating or production. This fast-growing variety blooms early and becomes dormant earlier than other varieties. Berry Blue Honeyberry makes a great pollinator for Borealis, Tundra or the Indigo varieties.
Haskap is the Japanese name for these berries and this term has been adopted for the University of Saskatchewan varieties. In other areas they are more commonly known as Honeyberry which is why we call this Eastern European variety Honeyberry.
A pollinator variety, Berry Blue blooms at much the same time as Borealis, Tundra and Indigo, making it ideal for pollination of those and other cultivars to ensure a high yield of fruit. As with a number of the pollinators, this bush produces decent fruit, but noticeably smaller and tarter than Borealis, Tundra, or the Indigo series.
