Dutchmans pipe vs Royal Star Magnolia

The Royal Star Magnolia, or Star Magnolia, is an early-blooming, white fragrant flower. It has a form that resembles a starburst, hence the name. This multi-stemmed deciduous shrub is extremely popular and has won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

The Royal Star Magnolia attracts birds and butterflies to your garden, with their large, showy flowers blooming even before it’s foliage which features a medium green leaf. They prefer slightly acidic soils.

The Dutchman’s Pipe is a fast growing, deciduous, woody, climbing vine. Featuring large heart-shaped leaves that overlap and often hide the flowers. The Dutchman’s Pipe namesake comes from the long yellow-green, brown or purple flowers that flare at the end, resembling Dutch smoking pipes.

The Dutchman’s Pipe will make a great screen or shade in your urban landscape, but does require support from a trellis or a fence. To control the growth, cut back in late winter.
