How to transplant an established tree
show all care and maintenance questionsFirst, you should't move a tree unless it is absolutely necessary. When you move a tree you risk damaging or killing it.
However, if you do need to transplant a tree be sure follow these recommendations.
Most deciduous and coniferous trees can be transplanted at the following times:
- Spring - before the tree begins to bud but after frost has left the ground
- Fall - once the tree has begun dropping its foliage
There is some evidence that conifers may perform better if transplanted in the fall within 6 weeks of freeze up.
Some fleshy-rooted deciduous species should only be transplanted in the spring. These include:
- Birch
- Oak
- Poplar
