River Alder is a native shrub of the boreal forest across North America. It is a large shrub to small tree, with a multi-stemmed, spreading habit. It is most recognizable by its small brown seed cones and smooth silver-grey bark with white horizontal lenticels.
Also commonly known as Speckled Alder and Red Alder, Alnus rugosa is closely related to other circumpolar alders and is also identified as Alnus incana ssp. tenuifolia.
