Silver Buffalo Berry vs Bog Cranberry

Shepherdia argentea

Vaccinium vitis-idaea

Silver Buffalo Berry
Bog Cranberry

Silver Buffalo Berry is a cold hardy, ornamental shrub. It features subtle yellow flowers, smooth grey bark, and red fruit. On occasion orange fruit is produced and rarely a yellow fruit. Please note: we regularly collect the rare yellow and orange fruit to use for our seed source.

Long-lived and slow growing, Silver Buffalo Berry is commonly found around sloughs, in coulees, and on light soils across the prairies, and grows best in full sun.

Buyers can enjoy increased bird life to their property, as this shrub acts as a habitat plant.

This species is also known as one of the more salt-tolerant species for those with saline soils.

Note: this berry tastes terrible fresh, but makes a highly desirable jam or jelly with what is described as a clove and pear taste.

Bog Cranberry is a native, ground cover species.

These plants generally produce one crop per year in summer. The plants have single blooms. Leaves are bright green, oval and alternate. New growth can be covered with fine hairs. Plants may spread 3 feet in width forming a dense mat which makes it attractive as an ornamental ground cover.

Wild crops of Bog Cranberry are harvested each year in Newfoundland (more than 200,000 lbs/yr). Harvest of wild fruit can no longer keep up with demand there. In Europe, 80 million pounds per year of this crop is grown or harvested from the wild.

Lingonberry flowers are similar in shape to those of blueberry and may be white or pink in color. These berries are considered to be highly flavored but not as tart as cranberries.
