Sea Buckthorn (Seaberry)
Aurora Haskap

Sea Buckthorn (increasingly known as Seaberry) is a shrub that produces attractive berries high in vitamin C.

While we can't confirm claims that the berries are effective in treating various ailments, many people believe consuming the berries helps with arthritis, infections, and asthma, among other things.

Because Sea Buckthorn plants have attractive pale silvery-green leaves, dense branches, and large thorns, people like to grow them in ornamental hedges or as a first row in a shelterbelt.

This species is also known as one of the more salt-tolerant species for those with saline soils.

Very popular with permaculture types who use the nitrogen fixing properties of this plant to benefit other nearby fruits.

Note: these plants typically reach maturity and make their sex easily known (females producing fruit) in their 3rd or 4th year of growth. Our seedlings are too young to identify their sex.

This new University of Saskatchewan release is a great tasting berry bush. The bushes fruit in late June and the berry taste has been compared to raspberry and blueberry. The fruit can be used for eating fresh, baking, jams and jellies, freezing. The fruit is high in vitamins, fibre, and anti-oxidants.

Aurora is a pollinator variety that causes other varieties to have a higher yield when planted together. Borealis and Aurora have similar taste but differ in the size and shape of the fruit. Aurora is a great companion variety for the Borealis.
