Sea Buckthorn (Seaberry) vs River Alder

Hippophae rhamnoides L.

Alnus incana

Sea Buckthorn (Seaberry)
River Alder

Sea Buckthorn (increasingly known as Seaberry) is a shrub that produces attractive berries high in vitamin C.

While we can't confirm claims that the berries are effective in treating various ailments, many people believe consuming the berries helps with arthritis, infections, and asthma, among other things.

Because Sea Buckthorn plants have attractive pale silvery-green leaves, dense branches, and large thorns, people like to grow them in ornamental hedges or as a first row in a shelterbelt.

This species is also known as one of the more salt-tolerant species for those with saline soils.

Very popular with permaculture types who use the nitrogen fixing properties of this plant to benefit other nearby fruits.

Note: these plants typically reach maturity and make their sex easily known (females producing fruit) in their 3rd or 4th year of growth. Our seedlings are too young to identify their sex.

River Alder is a large shrub or small tree with a multi-stemmed, spreading habit. A shrub native to the boreal forests across North America, River Alder is an excellent tree for soil stabilization near rivers and creeks.

This tree is recognizable by its small brown seed cones and smooth, silver-grey bark with white horizontal lenticels. Unlike Green Alder, River Alder's seed pods are long and hang off short branches.

Unlike the other alder varieties, River Alder is attractive enough to be included in riverside plantings by municipal and provincial park organizations.
