Can I plant trees in the fall?

show all planting questions

We do not recommend planting trees in the fall. Fall planting requires very precise planning and even then, bad weather can easily damage or kill your new trees.

The best time to plant a tree is in the spring or early summer once the ground is thawed and the risk of experiencing a severe frost has past. This gives the tree ample time to overcome shock, flush, and establish itself before the challenges of winter.
